May at a Glance
BIMA PitchFest
BIMA held it's first ever PitchFest: Bridging The Gap event - an unforgettable night of purpose-driven innovation, bold ideas, and meaningful connection.
Together, we spotlighted the untapped talent in our Muslim communities and explored how we can scale health innovation with faith, equity, and impact at the core.
Let’s keep building a future where health solutions are not only smarter, but more inclusive, ethical, and community-driven.
Palestine Webinars
Continuing our webinar series on Palestine advocacy, in May we hosted the BMA for our second session to discuss—and challenge—their role in supporting doctors who advocate for Palestine.
Our third webinar, held on 14 May, featured Dr Nadeem Crowe and his solicitor Liana Wood, who shared an update on his case and Dr Mariam Karimi also introduced a new guidance document for healthcare professionals advocating for Palestine.
Our fourth webinar in this series will take place on 16 May with the GMC. Please sign up here.
Webinar: Hajj Health Matters
We held a hajj webinar for those embarking on the journey of a lifetime, and those leading groups on hajj. We covered what essentials pilgrims need to take, what vaccinations are required, how to look after our mental health, and how to help and support those who may need extra support.
The webinar was engaging and the audience had an opportunity to ask our healthcare professionals all the questions they had.
Access the webinar recording and our blog post on the topic of hajj below:
Islam teaches that a wise person is one who remembers death and prepares for what comes after. Let’s reflect on our intentions, deeds and responsibilities so we can lead a meaningful life and seek a good ending!
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill is scheduled for further debate in Parliament on 13th June with voting likely to take place the following week. This bill proposes legalising assisted dying for terminally ill adults in England and Wales.
On 22nd May, we hosted a webinar featuring BIMA's Dr Nadia Khan and Pete Donnelly from Not Dead Yet UK, discussing how the bill could affect disabled people.
We honour the invaluable contributions of Nurses worldwide and underscores the importance of their health and well-being.
This year, we spotlight the rich history of Islamic Nursing, honouring trailblazers like Rufaida al-Aslamia - the first Muslim Nurse, whose contributions continue to inspire.
Debate on Assisted Dying
In a recent panel published by Hyphen, Dr Nadia Khan – consultant in palliative care and BIMA Council member joined Nick Spencer (Theos) and Nathan Stilwell (Humanists UK) for a vital discussion on the proposed Assisted Dying Bill. Dr Khan argued that introducing assisted suicide would set a dangerous precedent — one that shifts healthcare’s ethical foundations and disproportionately threatens the vulnerable, especially in a system already stretched thin.
