As we prepare to say farewell to Ramadan, we reflect on our iftars in Glasgow, Birmingham and London. We raised over £30,000 to support Muslim Aid's campaign to rebuild health systems in Gaza.
Looking ahead, we are excited to invite you to the BIMA National Conference 2025: Saving the Health of the Nation. This year's conference will take place on Saturday, 28th June at Sancroft Convene, London. This will be the largest gathering of UK-based Muslim healthcare professionals, featuring world-class speakers, engaging panel discussions, and invaluable networking opportunities. Book your tickets here.
Calling all female BIMA members, we have a new BIMA Women’s Network. Email membership@britishima.org to join.
Finally, with a new BIMA Council, we are looking for regional and professional leads to empower Muslim communities. If you are interested or would like to nominate someone, email membership@britishima.org.

BIMA Urges Professional Bodies to Condemn the Killing of 400 Palestinians in Gaza
BIMA Urges Professional Bodies to Condemn the Killing of 400 Palestinians and the Ongoing Destruction of Healthcare in Gaza
In the letter to 22 organisations, we highlight the stark contrast between the swift condemnation of violence in Ukraine and other conflicts, and the near silence on Palestine. We urges our professional bodies to uphold their moral responsibility, and speak out against the ongoing humanitarian crisis and genocide. We raise concerns that Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism, compounded specifically by dehumanisation of the Palestinian people, is at the root of the double standards.
Alhamdulillah, our fundraising iftars with Muslim Aid across the UK were a great success! We brought together over 250 attendees and thanks to your generosity, we raised £30,000 to support our brothers and sisters in Gaza.
May Allah accept our efforts and reward those who donated abundantly.
RCGP and ReWired Iftars
BIMA co-hosted two fantastic iftars for the first time this year. First, at RCGP London, Dr Salman Waqar chaired a pertinent panel session about the benefits of Ramadan and its unique ability to strengthen Muslims GPs holistically.
At Digital Health Rewired, Dr Qasim Javed spoke alongside co-hosts Hassan Chaudhury and Asma Nafees. Attendees at both events were diverse and experienced the communal spirit of Ramadan through iftar.
Celebrating Muslim Heritage Month
Muslim contributions to medicine in the UK span centuries!
From Ibn Sīnā and Dr. Frederick Akbar Mahomed, to the 44,500+ Muslim doctors & 17,000+ Muslim nurses and many other professionals serving the NHS today.
We held over 100 Healthy Ramadan Campaign presentations in locations across the UK this year. The sessions were delivered at mosques, community centres or online.
The feedback was positive and attendees found the information highly valuable and practical.
BIMA Islamophobia Training at Kingston Hospital
On 12th March, BIMA delivered Islamophobia Awareness Training at Kingston Hospital, London. This session aimed to equip staff with practical tools to better support Muslim colleagues and patients, fostering a more inclusive and understanding workplace.
The training covered key insights on recognising and addressing Islamophobia in healthcare settings, ensuring that both staff and patients feel safe and supported.
UN Day to Combat Islamophobia 2025
Islamophobia is not just an abstract concept; it is a lived reality for many Muslim healthcare professionals in the UK. Defined by the APPG on British Muslims as “rooted in racism and a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness,” Islamophobia manifests in ways that can affect careers, mental health, and everyday life.
The UN Day to Combat Islamophobia is an opportunity to highlight that addressing these issues requires more than symbolic gestures. It demands concrete action—from employers implementing robust policies against discrimination to colleagues speaking up when they witness Islamophobia directed at a member of their team.
How the racist riots of 2024 affected NHS staff – published in the BMJ
A recent article published in The BMJ highlights the ongoing issues of racism and Islamophobia in the NHS, particularly in the aftermath of the racist riots of the summer of 2024. It draws on key findings from our recent BIMA survey on the experiences of Muslim healthcare professionals in the immediate aftermath of the violence.
