As we enter the new Islamic year, 1448 AH, and the blessed month of Muharram, we are reminded of the enduring values of faith, integrity, sacrifice and justice. This sacred month inspires us to uphold truth with courage, serve humanity with compassion, and advocate for those whose voices are too often unheard. These principles continue to guide BIMA's mission across healthcare and society.
This edition of BIMA Pulse highlights one of our defining strengths: advocacy with purpose. BIMA continues to champion fairness, equity and compassionate leadership, ensuring that the voices of Muslim healthcare professionals and the communities we serve are represented where it matters most.
In recent months, our advocacy has remained at the forefront of national conversations. From engaging policymakers on regulatory reform and professional fairness to challenging discrimination and contributing to consultations that shape the future of healthcare, BIMA has continued to provide principled, evidence-based leadership. Our aim is not simply to respond to change, but to help shape it.
Alongside this, our volunteers, members and partners continue to make a lasting impact through community health, education, humanitarian response and professional development. These efforts reflect the values that define BIMA which is to Advocate, Empower & Unite.
As we reflect during Muharram, may we renew our commitment to serving with sincerity, advocating with wisdom and compassion, and working together towards a healthcare system that is equitable, inclusive and compassionate for all.

The British Muslim Health Awards return for 2026, and nominations are now open.
Following a successful inaugural year, we're once again celebrating the outstanding contributions of Muslim healthcare professionals who are making a lasting difference to patients, colleagues, and communities across the UK.
Do you know an inspiring colleague, mentor, or rising star whose work deserves national recognition? Or perhaps you'd like to put yourself forward? We encourage nominations from across all healthcare professions.
The Awards will take place on Saturday 12 December 2026 at the Royal Nawaab Pyramid, Stockport, bringing together healthcare leaders and changemakers from across the UK for an evening celebrating excellence, service, and impact.

BIMA provided an opportunity to its members and guests to meet Dr Shaykh Yasir Qadhi and listen to an insightful talk on Purpose Beyond Profession. Hosted with the support of Carter Gem Investments, the event brought healthcare professionals together in Birmimgham and London over 2 nights for an evening of reflection on purpose, faith, and service, alongside the opportunity to connect with colleagues over dinner.

JBIMA Volume 22 – Out Now
The latest edition of the Journal of the British Islamic Medical Association (jBIMA) is now available, featuring original research, editorials, and reflections from contributors across the UK and internationally.
This issue explores a range of contemporary topics at the intersection of healthcare, ethics, and faith, including mental health, palliative care, humanitarian medicine, male circumcision, fasting, and the delivery of healthcare in conflict settings.
We encourage members to read, share, and contribute to this growing body of scholarship.
Following the publication of the recent national maternity reviews, including the Amos Maternity Report, BIMA issued a statement calling for faith-informed, equitable maternity care that better meets the needs of Muslim women and other underserved communities.
Successive inquiries have highlighted persistent concerns around patient safety, with too many women reporting that they were not listened to during their maternity care.
BIMA is calling for meaningful action, including improved cultural competence, greater religious literacy, faith-sensitive bereavement support, inclusive workplaces, and stronger partnerships with communities to help ensure safe, compassionate care for all.
June has been a significant month for BIMA's advocacy work as we continue to represent the interests of Muslim healthcare professionals and champion fairness across the healthcare system.
Following the publication of the Lord Mann Review, BIMA met with Lord Mann and the Department of Health and Social Care to raise members' concerns about the report's recommendations and the need to address all forms of racism in healthcare regulation.
We also joined a coalition of 13 minority healthcare organisations representing more than 13,000 NHS staff in calling for the implementation of the review's recommendations to be paused until meaningful engagement with affected communities has taken place.
We also issued a statement following the violence and disorder in Belfast, reaffirming that healthcare settings must remain places of safety and condemning all acts of racism, Islamophobia, and intimidation directed towards healthcare workers and local communities.
Our advocacy continues to focus on protecting professional integrity, promoting equity, and ensuring the voices of Muslim healthcare professionals are heard where decisions affecting our members are made.
Bringing together chaplains, healthcare professionals, Islamic scholars, researchers, and those with lived experience, the BIMA Chaplaincy Conference 2026 explored end-of-life care, organ donation, spiritual support, and ethical decision-making through the lens of faith and clinical practice.

BIMA at Muslim Tech Fest
BIMA was pleased to host a panel discussion at Muslim Tech Fest, bringing together clinicians, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders to explore how innovation can help shape the future of healthcare.
The discussion examined the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies, highlighting the importance of ensuring innovation improves patient outcomes, advances equity, and remains centred on the needs of patients and communities.
Thank you to our panelists, Dr Qasim Malik, Adama Ibrahim, Hassan Chaudhury, and Haris Shuaib, and to everyone who joined us for an engaging discussion. We look forward to continuing to strengthen connections between healthcare and technology through future collaborations.
HPV Awareness Workshop
The HPV Cancer Team is thrilled to announce the successful delivery of our pilot HPV Awareness Workshop, organised in collaboration with RM Partners and the West London Islamic Centre.
We were delighted to see a great turnout, with brothers and sisters of all ages attending the session. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many encouraging us to continue organising similar events, particularly around HPV vaccination and cancer prevention.
This workshop was delivered as part of the RM Partners grant, and we are grateful for their support in helping us engage our local communities with this important health topic.
We hope, insha'Allah, to host many more awareness events over the coming months.
BIMA Attends the Muslim Census Report Launch
BIMA recently attended the launch of the latest Muslim Census report, which provides valuable insight into the experiences of British Muslims across the UK. The findings highlight persistent health inequalities, deprivation and reduced healthy life expectancy, while also recognising the strengths of a young, resilient community with growing educational attainment and a strong sense of belonging.
The report reinforces the importance of BIMA's work to advance health equity and support healthier communities through advocacy, education and community partnerships.
